Extreme Weather Protection

“A quick note about ARXX products.  On April 27, 2011 my house took a direct hit from an EF-5 tornado in Harvest,  Alabama.  Winds were clocked at 210 mph.  I built the house using ARXX ICF forms from the basement to the top plate of the first floor.  Every stick lumber home around my place is 50% to 100% destroyed.  My house sustained damage to the the shingles, soffit, gutters and down spouts. The super structure of the house is intact with no damage.  Thanks for your products.”

The facts

Death and destruction from extreme weather does not have to happen. It is preventable. Building with ARXX ICFs saves lives, saves money and saves property from extreme damage.

Disaster damage has been doubling every five to seven years since the 1960's, an alarming trend. Whether you’re living in an area prone to tornadoes, or on the coastal path of hurricanes, severe weather claims lives every year and accounts for billions of dollars in property damage. If you are thinking of building, learn more about how you can build to prevent catastrophic damage.

“I really felt safe in my ARXX home when the hurricane came through.
This is the safest place I could have been – my advice to anyone would be don’t evacuate;
you never know where a hurricane will turn to. I wanted to build the safest building I could and I did.”

A cost-effective way to build a strong and safe home.

When you are building in an area where severe weather poses a threat, or re-building after a natural disaster, ARXX Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) are a cost-effective way to make sure that the next time a tornado or hurricane hits, you, your family and your property are safe and secure in your home. A structure built with ARXX ICFs has been proven time after time to keep its occupants safe and personal property secure, even when taking a direct hit from a tornado or hurricane. The foundation and walls of an ARXX home are reinforced concrete that is 25% stronger than conventional concrete walls and able to withstand the impact of wind-blown debris from a category 5 hurricane. To watch a video of the wind testing and see an F2 tornado hit an ICF home, visit . In fact, ARXX structures can meet FEMA shelter performance standards.

 Building just to code may not be enough to protect you and your family from the devastation of extreme weather. The extra cost of adding more materials and labor to withstand extreme weather when using conventional wood-framing is cost prohibitive for many families, But not with ARXX ICFs. ARXX ICFs meet all building codes, they also provide a costeffective way to build with the added protection needed for extreme weather standards.

Everyone saves when you build with ARXX.

Heating and cooling can account for up to 70% of a home's energy costs. ARXX ICFs are highly energy-efficient and require 44% less energy to heat and 32% less energy to cool. This means big savings and puts more money back in the hands of homeowners. As well, insurance premiums can be reduced by building with ARXX, particularly in areas of extreme weather and high wind zones. For builders, constructing a home with ARXX takes less time and uses less material and labor compared to conventional foundation and timber-frame wall construction. The ARXX ICF building technology combines five steps of conventional construction into one. An ARXX foundation or wall provides the structural element together with the insulation, vapor and air barriers, sound barrier and fastening strips for interior and exterior finishes, in one step.

Tested and proven.

One of the greatest threats to people and property during a tornado or hurricane is debris driven by high winds. ARXX ICF walls have successfully demonstrated the strength and mass to stop the penetration of airborne projectiles through the wall assembly. Category 5 hurricane conditions were simulated with a 2 x 4 stud launched at over 100 mph, the speed at which debris can travel in a 250 mph wind. Safe, secure, green and healthy.

ARXX homes are not only energy-efficient, they also improve indoor air quality, temperature control and provide superior sound suppression. The EPS insulation is inert, non-toxic and naturally waterproof with no CFCs, HCFCs, formaldehyde or other VOCs. ARXX ICFs provide a defense against the growth of mold, mildew, rot and pests such as termites.

That means that even if water penetrates the home because of windows or doors that may be damaged or blown out in a storm, the damage is limited. Gypsum board may have to be removed from the walls, but after the EPS insulation is dried out, the gypsum board can be reattached without the worry of mold, mildew and rot developing in the wall cavity. A big advantage over conventional timber-frame construction.

Featured Project

Ace Hardware

This ACE Hardware store project on the coast of Oregon came with a very straight forward design.  However, that doesn't mean the crew wasn't faced with it's share of challenges.  The building went up during a winter storm.  During construction winds of over 65 mph made constructing the store less than enjoyable for the crew.  The result however, was no lost time.
